Other groups differentiate themselves by focusing on a specific industry or sector. Established in Finland in 2000, Mobile Monday (MoMo) is a global non-profit platform for the mobile industry community, which organises networking events in Bangkok. Other chapters operate in New York, Silicon Valley, London, Sydney, Paris, Mumbai, Beijing, Singapore and Tokyo, with more cities launching regularly.

“We’re the premium networking event for leading technology influencers,” says Ville Kulmala, chairman of MoMo Thailand. “Each of our events includes educational and comprehensive presentations. We’ve held joint events, such as with MoMo Beijing, where we present Thailand as a technology opportunity to the local investors and leaders.”

A MoMo event normally invites three prominent speakers with expertise in specific areas such as mobile development, business development, e-commerce, online advertising or business start-ups and each gives a 15-20 minute presentation; they are discouraged from turning their presentations into sales pitches. Before and after the presentations there is ample opportunity to network. Presentations are in English and Thai, with a bilingual translator on hand; the audience is predominantly Thai.

“We aim to create a professional ambience, choosing top locations and top speakers,” adds co-organiser Ellen Boonstra. “Events are quarterly, and that’s because we opt for quality, not quantity, attracting guests from the global and local mobile tech scene.” As a non-profit organisation, MoMo is run by volunteers and attendance is free of charge. Major players in the mobile tech industry have given presentations and many overseas speakers and guests fly in specifically to deliver a speech or just to attend.
